The home I’d like to talk about is my family’s old apartment in Mohe, my father’s hometown in the far north of China. My parents bought it in the early 1990s, but they moved away many years ago for work, so it hasn’t really been our main home for a long time. These days, we only stay there occasionally when we go back to visit relatives.

我想说的是我们家位于漠河的一套老公寓。漠河是我父亲的家乡，位于中国非常靠北的地方。我父母在20世纪90年代初买下了这套房子，不过他们很多年前就因为工作搬去了其他城市，因此这里早已不是我们平常居住的家。现在我们基本只是在回去探望亲戚的时候偶尔住在那里。

It’s a fairly modest apartment of about 70 square meters, with two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and a bathroom. The funny thing is that when I was in kindergarten, I thought it was enormous. This article is from Laokaoya website. I have a vivid memory of running from one end of the apartment to the other and feeling as if there was endless space. When I went back as an adult, though, I couldn’t believe how small it seemed. I suppose your sense of space changes quite dramatically as you grow up.

这是一套比较普通的公寓，大约70平方米，有两间卧室、一个客厅、一间厨房和一个卫生间。有意思的是，我上幼儿园的时候觉得这套房子特别大。我到现在都清楚地记得自己从房子的一头跑到另一头，当时感觉里面似乎有无穷无尽的空间。但长大以后再次回去时，我简直不敢相信它看起来竟然这么小。我想随着年龄增长，一个人对空间大小的感觉确实会发生很大的变化。

The main reason I still visit the apartment from time to time is that quite a few of my relatives live in Mohe. When I was younger, my family would normally go back during the Spring Festival because that was one of the few times of the year when everyone was free from work or school. We’d stay there for a few days, visit relatives, have meals together and catch up with family members we hadn’t seen for months.

我现在偶尔还会去这套房子，主要是因为漠河仍然住着不少亲戚。我小时候，我们家通常会选择春节期间回去，因为那是一年中为数不多的大家都不用工作或者上学的时间。我们一般会在那里住上几天，拜访亲戚、一起吃饭，并和几个月没有见面的家人好好聊聊天。

Although I have a lot of childhood memories associated with the apartment, I definitely wouldn’t want to settle down there permanently, and the biggest reason is the climate. Winters in Mohe can be brutally cold, with temperatures sometimes dropping below minus 40 degrees Celsius. Once you step outside, you have to wrap yourself up in several layers of clothing, and even a short walk can become quite uncomfortable.

虽然这套公寓承载着我的许多童年回忆，但我肯定不愿意在那里长期定居，而最主要的原因就是当地的气候。漠河的冬天可以冷得非常厉害，气温有时甚至会降到零下40摄氏度以下。只要出门，就得把自己裹上好几层厚衣服，甚至走一小段路都会变得相当难受。

Heavy snow and icy roads can also make everyday life much less convenient. Deliveries may be delayed, getting around takes more effort, and during the coldest part of winter I’d probably end up spending most of my time indoors. I don’t mind experiencing that kind of weather for a few days when I’m visiting family, and in some ways it’s actually quite memorable. But living with it for months every single year would be a completely different story. So I have a lot of affection for the apartment, but it’s somewhere I’d much rather visit than call home again.

大雪和结冰的道路也会让日常生活变得不那么方便。快递可能会延误，出门办事也需要花费更多精力，而在冬天最寒冷的时候，我估计自己最后大部分时间都会待在室内。回去探亲的时候体验几天这样的天气，我并不介意，从某种意义上来说甚至还挺让人难忘。但如果每年都要连续几个月生活在这样的环境里，那就是完全不同的一回事了。所以，我对这套公寓有很深的感情，但相比重新把它当成自己的家，我更愿意偶尔回去看看。
