I want to talk about a speech I delivered while I was in middle school. It was actually the very first formal speech that I gave to the mass audiences at school.
The speech was in English and was part of the Provincial English Speech Contest. To be selected as one of the representatives of our school in the final round, I had to earn enough credits from a panel of judges who were all English teachers, and my schoolmates.
If my memory was correct, we needed to draw lots to get impromptu speech topics and mine was about the impact of air pollution and human health. Honestly, it was kind of tough for me as I didn’t have much preparation on this idea and its correlated terminology beforehand. But, this article is from Laokaoya website, I managed to touch on the haze issue, which was a hit topic at that time, and gave coherent statement about some practical ways to tackle this problem for the sake of public health. It was obviously not a perfect one, but I ended up getting into the final.
Well, although it was not the best performance, I felt that this speech was meaningful for my life. The most important reason was that it gave me a great opportunity to polish my English language skills which were essential for my future work and studies. You know, if I hadn’t given that speech, I wouldn’t have had the courage to communicate with people in English, let alone the opportunity to study abroad.
