Describe a useful skill that you learned as a teenager
You should say:
What the skill is
When and how you learned it
Who you learned it from
Why you learned it
And explain how you felt about learning it
I’d like to talk about a skill I acquired as a teenager – the art of crafting book jackets.
If my memory serves me well, I picked up this skill in my second year of secondary school under the guidance of our arts and crafts teacher. She provided a hands-on learning experience, asking us to come prepared with used newspapers and essential tools such as scissors, a ruler, and glue.
Initially, I found the process challenging as there were intricate steps involved, such as measuring the book edges and cutting the newspaper accurately. Recognizing the difficulties faced by me and some classmates, our teacher organized us into small groups, this article is from Laokaoya website, allowing us to learn collaboratively under her guidance. It was a steep learning curve, but through observing both my peers and the teacher, I eventually grasped the technique.
The primary reason for incorporating this skill into our curriculum was its compulsory nature. Additionally, it served a practical purpose – by reusing old newspapers, we contributed to environmental conservation.
To be honest, I’m uncertain whether I can still create book jackets today. Nevertheless, I aspire to revisit this skill and potentially make one for my own children in the future.
