The plan I’d like to talk about is to take part in an annual singing competition at my university and, ideally, walk away with the championship. The competition is called the Top 10 Singers, and it’s one of the most high-profile student events on campus. The final is normally held in the largest auditorium at my university, which can accommodate around 800 people. Tickets are always in high demand, and students sometimes start queuing outside the venue hours before the show begins just to get a good seat.

我要讲的计划是参加学校每年举办的校园十佳歌手比赛，并且最好能够一举拿下冠军。这项比赛是学校里最受关注的学生活动之一。决赛通常会在学校最大的礼堂举行，那里大约可以容纳800人。比赛门票总是很抢手，有些学生甚至会在演出开始前几个小时就在场馆外排队，只为了抢到一个好位置。

One of the reasons I came up with this plan is that the competition is almost impossible to ignore if you’re a student at my university. In the weeks leading up to it, posters seem to be everywhere, in elevators, on the walls of teaching buildings and on notice boards in the dormitories. It also generates a huge amount of buzz among students. Even when I’m back in my dorm, I often hear my roommates talking about memorable performances from previous years or arguing over who deserved to win. After being surrounded by all that excitement, I gradually started wondering whether I could actually compete myself rather than simply watch from the sidelines.

我产生这个计划的一个原因是，只要你是我们学校的学生，就几乎不可能忽视这项比赛。在比赛前的几个星期里，海报似乎到处都是，电梯里、教学楼的墙上以及宿舍的公告栏上都能看到。它在学生中也会引发大量讨论。哪怕回到宿舍，我也经常听到室友讨论往届令人印象深刻的表演，或者争论究竟谁更应该夺冠。一直处在这种热烈的氛围中，我慢慢开始想，与其每年都站在旁边看，为什么不亲自参加一次呢？

Of course, entering the competition is one thing, but winning it is another matter altogether. Given how popular it is, I imagine the competition will be incredibly fierce. So the first thing I plan to do is ask a friend of mine for help. He’s studying popular singing at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music, so he has far more professional training than I do. I also need to work on things like breath control, pitch and stage presence. If the plan actually works out and I manage to win the championship, I’d be absolutely thrilled. Ever since I was a child, quite a few people have told me that I have a good singing voice, but I’ve never really put that claim to the test in a serious competition. Winning would therefore give me an enormous sense of accomplishment and prove to myself that all the time and effort I’d put into preparing had paid off.

如果这个计划真的能够实现，而且我最终拿到冠军的话，我肯定会欣喜若狂。从小到大，有不少人都夸过我唱歌好听，但我从来没有真正通过一场正式比赛来检验过自己的水平。因此，如果能够获胜，我会获得巨大的成就感，同时也能向自己证明，为比赛投入的所有时间和努力最终都得到了回报。

And, to be perfectly frank, there is another slightly less noble reason. Winning such a high-profile competition would probably make me something of a campus celebrity, at least for a while. I’d suddenly have hundreds of people knowing who I was, and I have to admit that the idea is quite appealing. It might sound a little vain, but I think most people would enjoy being in the spotlight once in a while. So for me, winning would be a combination of personal achievement, recognition and simply having an unforgettable university experience.

当然，说得坦白一点，我还有一个没那么“高尚”的原因。如果能够赢得这样一场备受关注的比赛，我很可能会成为学校里的小名人，至少能风光一阵子。突然有几百个人知道我是谁，我不得不承认，这种感觉对我还是挺有吸引力的。听起来可能有一点虚荣，但我觉得大多数人偶尔都会享受一下成为众人焦点的感觉。所以对我来说，赢得比赛既意味着个人成就和他人的认可，也会成为一段令人难忘的大学经历。
