A special cake I received that has really stuck in my mind dates back to my final year of high school, about three years ago. It wasn’t actually a birthday cake for me. It was made to celebrate the 100th anniversary of my school, which made the whole experience quite unusual.

我收到过的一块让我一直印象深刻的特殊蛋糕，要追溯到大约三年前我读高三的时候。其实，那并不是为我准备的生日蛋糕，而是为了庆祝我们学校建校100周年而制作的，所以整个经历非常特别。

I still remember that the celebration took place on July 8th. The school had gone to great lengths to mark the occasion and organized a large anniversary event attended by students, teachers and quite a few former students. There were speeches and various celebrations, but what really caught my attention was an enormous cake that had been specially ordered for the occasion.

I’d never seen anything quite like it before. Instead of being a conventional round cake, it was rectangular and large enough to be divided into hundreds of portions. This article is from Laokaoya website. The top was decorated with the school logo, its name and messages of congratulations in both Chinese and English. The number 100 was also prominently displayed as part of the decoration, so there was absolutely no mistaking what the cake was celebrating.

我以前从来没有见过这样的蛋糕。它并不是传统的圆形，而是一个巨大的长方形蛋糕，足以被分成数百份。蛋糕顶部装饰着学校的标志、校名以及中英文的祝福语。“100”这个数字也被放在非常显眼的位置作为装饰的一部分，所以任何人一眼就能看出这个蛋糕是在庆祝什么。

After the formal part of the celebration was over, the cake was cut up and handed out to the people attending the event. My class teacher gave me my piece, and by sheer luck, I ended up with a section that contained part of the number 100 on top. I remember being ridiculously pleased about that because most of my classmates simply got ordinary pieces with cream and fruit on them. I even took a photo of mine before eating it.

What made the cake so special to me wasn’t really its taste. To be perfectly frank, I can barely remember what it tasted like. What I do remember vividly is the occasion it represented. A centenary is a once-in-a-lifetime milestone for a school, and I happened to be a student there when it took place. Being given a piece of that cake made me feel that I was taking part in a tiny piece of the school’s history.

对我来说，这块蛋糕之所以如此特别，其实并不是因为它的味道。说实话，我现在几乎已经记不起它是什么味道了。但我仍然清楚记得它所代表的那个场合。对于一所学校而言，百年校庆是一个极为重要而难得的里程碑，而它举行的时候，我恰好是那里的学生。拿到那块蛋糕，让我觉得自己也参与了学校历史中的一个小小片段。

Looking back, I feel incredibly lucky to have been there. I’ve received much more expensive and probably much tastier cakes since then, but none of them has carried quite the same significance. Whenever I think about that cake, it immediately brings back memories of my final year at school and that extraordinary anniversary celebration.

现在回想起来，我觉得自己非常幸运能够亲身参加那次活动。从那以后，我收到过价格更贵、可能也更加美味的蛋糕，但没有任何一个对我来说拥有同样的意义。每当我想到那块蛋糕，它都会立刻唤起我高三那一年以及那场特别的百年校庆的回忆。
