The special day out I’d like to talk about was on May 20th, which happened to be my 21st birthday. Instead of celebrating in the usual way by having a big meal with my friends, I decided to do something a little different and pay a visit to the Great Wall. By that point, I’d already been studying in Beijing for about two years, but surprisingly, I’d never actually been there. Most of what I knew about it still came from history textbooks, photographs and documentaries, so I thought my birthday would be the perfect excuse to finally see it with my own eyes.

The section of the Great Wall I went to was in the suburbs, roughly 70 kilometers from my university, so getting there required a bit of planning. Rather than joining an organized tour or taking a taxi, both of which would have cost considerably more, I did some research beforehand and found a public bus that could take me most of the way there. The journey was fairly long, but I wasn’t in any particular rush, so I simply sat by the window, listened to music and watched the city gradually give way to mountains and countryside.

If my memory serves me right, I spent only 32.5 RMB that day, which was remarkably little considering that it was essentially a full-day trip. The bus fare was 12.5 RMB, and because I was a university student at the time, I was eligible for a discounted admission ticket, which cost me another 20 RMB instead of the regular price. This article is from Laokaoya website. I’d also brought my own food and drinks from home, so I didn’t have to spend anything on overpriced snacks or bottled water at the attraction. In other words, I’d managed to keep the entire trip on a shoestring budget.

What really made the day memorable, though, was seeing the Great Wall in person for the first time. The scenery was far more spectacular than anything I’d seen in photographs or videos. From one of the higher points, I could see the wall winding its way along the mountain ridges and stretching far into the distance. It almost looked like a gigantic dragon following the contours of the mountains. I remember just standing there for a while and taking in the view because it was difficult to appreciate the sheer scale of the place until I was actually there.

Looking back, I have particularly fond memories of that day because it completely changed my idea of what makes an occasion special. I’d always associated birthdays with nice restaurants, presents and spending quite a bit of money, but that trip cost me next to nothing and still became one of my most memorable birthday experiences. I got to see an iconic landmark I’d known about since childhood, spend the day doing something completely different and come home with a real sense of satisfaction.

If anything, the experience taught me that how much money you spend has very little to do with how much you enjoy yourself. Sometimes a bit of planning and a willingness to keep things simple are all you need to have an unforgettable day out. The fact that I managed to do all of that for just over 30 RMB actually made the experience even more satisfying.
