The person I’d like to talk about is my mom, who’s in her fifties and used to work for a state-owned company before she retired. She’s always liked plants, but since retiring about two years ago, she’s had much more free time on her hands and has really taken up gardening as a hobby. I’d even say she’s developed quite a green thumb.

我想说的人是我妈妈。她五十多岁，退休之前曾经在一家国有企业工作。她一直都挺喜欢植物，不过大约两年前退休之后，她有了更多可以自由支配的时间，也真正开始把种植花草当成了自己的爱好。我甚至觉得她现在已经相当擅长园艺了。

We live in a house in the suburbs of my city, so fortunately she has plenty of space to grow things. Our backyard is dotted with all sorts of plants, and to be honest, I can’t even name some of them. This article is from Laokaoya website. As far as I know, quite a few are hardy, low-maintenance plants such as aloe and cacti. She also grows vegetables like cucumbers, and when they’re in season, we can sometimes pick them straight from the garden instead of buying them from a grocery store.

The plants that tend to catch people’s attention the most, though, are a couple of mulberry trees she grows in our rooftop garden. They’re quite unusual compared with all the smaller plants, so guests often notice them straight away. My mom keeps a close eye on all her plants and checks on them almost every day. Depending on what they need, she’ll water them, replace the potting soil, move the pots around so they get the right amount of sunlight, or trim off dead leaves. Whenever she’s away for a few days, I usually take over and look after them for her.

不过，最容易吸引客人注意的还是她种在我们屋顶花园里的几棵桑葚树。跟其他比较小的植物相比，它们显得很特别，所以客人通常一眼就会注意到。妈妈一直都很留心这些植物的状态，几乎每天都会去看看。根据植物的需要，她会给它们浇水、更换盆土，把花盆搬到阳光更加合适的位置，或者修剪掉枯萎的叶子。每当她需要外出几天的时候，我通常就会暂时接手，帮她照顾这些植物。

Well, I think the main reason she enjoys growing plants is that she genuinely loves being close to nature. You know, she’s the kind of person who gets a real sense of satisfaction from growing something from scratch and watching it gradually flourish. She sometimes treats her plants almost like children and gets surprisingly excited when a new leaf appears or when one of her vegetables is finally ready to be picked.

我觉得她喜欢种植植物，最主要的原因就是她真的很喜欢亲近大自然。她属于那种能够从亲手把一株植物慢慢养大、看着它逐渐茁壮成长的过程中获得很大满足感的人。有时候她几乎会把这些植物当成自己的孩子。每当长出一片新叶子，或者自己种的蔬菜终于可以采摘的时候，她都会表现得出乎意料地开心。

I also think gardening has been particularly good for her since she retired. Going from working full-time to suddenly having a lot of spare time can be quite an adjustment, and taking care of the garden gives her something meaningful to do every day. She finds it relaxing and almost therapeutic, and it gives her a real sense of purpose. For me, it’s just nice to see that something as simple as growing plants can bring her so much enjoyment.

我还觉得，退休之后做园艺对她尤其有好处。从每天全职工作突然变成拥有大量空闲时间，其实需要一个适应的过程，而照顾这些植物让她每天都有一些有意义的事情可以做。她觉得种植花草很放松，甚至有一种治愈的感觉，同时也让她觉得每天的生活有所寄托。对我来说，看到种植植物这样一件简单的事情能够给她带来这么多快乐，也是一件很开心的事情。
