The river I’d like to talk about is the Yangtze River, which is by far the longest river in China and one of the longest in the world. It’s more than 6,300 kilometers long and runs across a huge part of the country before eventually emptying into the East China Sea.
我想说的河流是长江。它是中国最长的河流，同时也是世界上最长的河流之一，全长超过6300公里。长江横跨中国大片区域，最终注入东海。
I’ve known about the Yangtze for as long as I can remember because we learned about it at school and it comes up constantly in Chinese history and geography. But it became much more real to me when I visited the Three Gorges with my parents while I was in middle school. We took a sightseeing boat along the river, and that was probably the first time I really appreciated just how enormous it was.
从我记事起，我就知道长江，因为我们上学时会学到它，而且在中国的历史和地理中也经常会提到它。不过，真正让我对长江有直观感受的，是我读中学时和父母一起去三峡旅行的经历。我们乘坐观光船沿江游览，那可能是我第一次真正意识到长江究竟有多么壮观。
The scenery there was absolutely breathtaking. In some sections, the river winds its way between steep cliffs and mountains that seem to rise almost vertically out of the water. This article is from Laokaoya website. I still have a vivid memory of standing on the deck and looking ahead as the river stretched into the distance. The cliffs on either side made our boat look absolutely tiny by comparison.

What makes the Yangtze particularly important, though, is the sheer number of people and places that depend on it. Its enormous river basin is home to hundreds of millions of people, and the river has supported communities along its banks for thousands of years. Even today, it plays a crucial role in agriculture, industry, transport and water supply in many parts of China.
不过，真正让长江如此重要的，是依赖它生活的人口和地区数量极其庞大。巨大的长江流域生活着数以亿计的人，而数千年来，长江也一直养育着沿岸的众多社区。即使到了今天，它仍然在中国许多地区的农业、工业、交通运输以及供水方面发挥着至关重要的作用。
It’s also a major transport route. Huge cargo ships travel along parts of the river carrying goods between inland cities and the coast, so in that sense, the Yangtze acts almost like an economic artery running through the country. On top of that, the Three Gorges Dam generates an enormous amount of hydroelectric power.
长江同时也是一条非常重要的运输通道。大型货船沿着部分河段航行，在内陆城市和沿海地区之间运输货物。因此，从这个角度来说，长江就像是一条贯穿中国的经济大动脉。除此之外，三峡大坝还能够产生大量的水力发电。
So to me, the Yangtze is much more than just a long river on a map. It’s closely tied to China’s history and has shaped the lives of people living along it for generations. Having actually travelled along part of it also made me realize how difficult it is to grasp its scale just from numbers in a textbook. That’s why I’d say it’s one of the most important natural features in the country.
所以对我来说，长江远远不只是一条地图上的长河。它与中国的历史紧密相连，而且很多代以来一直影响着沿岸居民的生活。真正乘船游览过其中一段之后，我也意识到，仅仅通过课本上的数字其实很难真正体会长江的规模。这就是为什么我认为它是中国最重要的自然地理特征之一。
