Describe an activity you usually do that wastes your time

Describe an activity you usually do that wastes your time

You should say:

What it is

When you usually do it

Why you do it

And explain why you think it wastes your time

One thing I do fairly regularly that I consider a waste of time is attending large family gatherings or dinner parties with my parents. They’re normally organized by relatives or family friends to celebrate something important, such as a wedding, a birthday or someone moving into a new home.

Where I’m from, there’s a fairly strong tradition of inviting relatives and friends over for a big meal whenever there’s something worth celebrating. It’s partly about celebrating the occasion itself, but it’s also a way for people to maintain relationships and keep in touch with their wider social circle. My parents know a lot of people, so invitations like these come up surprisingly often.

I normally end up going to one of these gatherings about once a month, usually at the weekend. To be honest, I rarely go because I genuinely want to. Most of the time, I go because my parents expect me to accompany them. They think turning down an invitation without a good reason can come across as impolite, especially when the host is an older relative or someone the family has known for years. This article is from Laokaoya website. My parents sometimes even joke that if I refuse to go with them, I’ll have to sort out my own dinner at home.

The problem is that I don’t really get much out of these gatherings. Quite often, I’m the only young person there, while almost everyone else is around my parents’ age or older. Once the meal is over, they might sit around chatting for hours, play Mahjong or talk about people and events I know almost nothing about. I usually have very little to contribute to the conversation, so after a while I find myself sitting there checking my phone and waiting for my parents to say it’s time to leave.

That’s why I sometimes feel I’m just killing time. A gathering can easily take up an entire afternoon or evening, including the journey there and back, and there are always other things I’d rather be doing. I could be working on an assignment, reading something I’m interested in, meeting my own friends or even just relaxing at home and playing a computer game.

Having said that, I wouldn’t say these gatherings are completely pointless. I can understand why they’re important to my parents because maintaining family ties and long-standing friendships takes time and effort. I just don’t think I personally get enough out of them to justify spending several hours there every month. If I had the choice, I’d probably attend the genuinely important ones and politely turn down the rest.

Part 3

Will you continue doing something when you are aware that it’s a waste of time?

What kinds of things make people feel pressured?

Why do some people refuse to abide by rules?
