I’d like to talk about something I did to improve my French when I was at university about two years ago. More specifically, I found a French international student on campus and asked him to become my language partner, which turned out to be one of the most effective things I did while learning the language.

我想讲的是大约两年前上大学时，为了提高法语水平所做的一件事。具体来说，我在校园里找到了一位法国留学生，请他做我的语伴。事实证明，这是我学习法语过程中最有效的方法之一。

At the time, French had only recently been introduced as an elective at my university. The problem was that there was only one French teacher teaching several different classes, so we didn’t get nearly enough classroom time to make substantial progress. I could memorize vocabulary and grammar rules on my own, but I rarely had the opportunity to put what I’d learned into practice. After a while, I realized that if I really wanted to get to grips with the language, I’d have to look beyond the classroom.

That’s when I came up with the idea of finding a language partner. It took me about a week of asking around before I eventually met a French student who was keen to improve his Chinese. We’d usually grab something to eat at a café near campus and spend a couple of hours chatting, switching back and forth between French and Chinese.

He corrected my pronunciation, taught me expressions that native speakers actually use and showed me more natural ways of phrasing things. In return, I did the same for his Chinese. Gradually, I stopped translating every sentence in my head and became much more comfortable expressing myself spontaneously in French.

这些交流特别有用的一点是，他能够立刻发现很多我自己从来没有意识到的错误。他会纠正我的发音，教我法国人实际使用的表达，并告诉我怎样说会更加自然。作为交换，我也会用同样的方法帮助他学习中文。渐渐地，我不再需要先在脑子里把每句话翻译一遍，而是能够更加自然、更加即兴地用法语表达自己的想法。

Looking back, I’m really glad I took the initiative to find a language partner. It not only improved my fluency and confidence, but also made French feel like a living language rather than just another subject in a textbook. More importantly, it taught me that when it comes to learning a foreign language, there’s really no substitute for putting it into practice with another person.

现在回过头来看，我特别庆幸自己当时主动寻找了一位语伴。它不仅提高了我的流利度和自信心，也让我意识到法语是一门真正用于交流的语言，而不只是课本上的另一个学习科目。更重要的是，这段经历让我明白，在学习外语这件事情上，真正与别人使用这门语言交流，是很难被其他学习方式完全取代的。
