The well-known person I’d like to talk about is Li Ning, a retired Chinese gymnast who later became a highly successful entrepreneur. He’s also the founder of the sportswear brand that bears his name. I think he’s something of a household name in China, not only because of his remarkable sporting career, but also because he managed to reinvent himself after retirement and make a name for himself in the business world.

我想说的这位名人是李宁。他是一位退役的中国体操运动员，后来成为了一名非常成功的企业家。他也是以自己名字命名的李宁运动品牌的创始人。我觉得他在中国可以说是家喻户晓，这不仅仅是因为他辉煌的运动生涯，还因为他在退役之后成功实现了人生转型，并在商业领域闯出了自己的一片天地。

I first heard about him when I was watching a gymnastics competition with my father as a child. One of the Chinese gymnasts made a mistake on the rings and missed out on a medal. My father immediately started talking about Li Ning and told me what an extraordinary gymnast he had been. This article is from Laokaoya website. I later learned that in the 1982 Gymnastics World Cup, he won six gold medals, which earned him the nickname “Prince of Gymnastics”. Two years later, at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, he walked away with another six medals, including three golds.

What makes his story particularly impressive to me is what happened after he retired. Instead of simply living off his reputation as a former Olympic champion, he made the transition from professional sport to business and founded his own sportswear brand. Over the years, Li-Ning has grown into one of the leading Chinese sports brands, selling everything from running shoes and basketball shoes to clothing and other sports equipment. So in a sense, he managed to build a second career that was completely different from his first one.

在我看来，他的故事真正令人印象深刻的地方在于退役之后发生的事情。他并没有仅仅依靠自己昔日奥运冠军的名气，而是完成了从职业体育到商业领域的转型，并创立了自己的运动品牌。经过多年的发展，李宁已经成长为中国主要的体育品牌之一，产品涵盖跑鞋、篮球鞋、服装以及其他运动装备。因此，从某种意义上来说，他成功打造了完全不同于运动员生涯的第二份事业。

Another moment that really cemented his place in the public eye was the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He was the person chosen to light the Olympic cauldron, and I still remember him appearing high above the stadium with the torch in his hand. Considering how many legendary athletes China has produced, being given that role says a lot about the status he has in Chinese sport.

另外一个让他进一步深入公众记忆的时刻，就是2008年北京奥运会开幕式。他被选中点燃奥运会主火炬，我到现在还记得他手持火炬出现在体育场上空的画面。中国曾经涌现出那么多杰出的运动员，而他能够获得这样一个重要的角色，本身就足以说明他在中国体育界的地位。

I admire him mainly because he managed to excel in two completely different fields. Reaching the top as an athlete is already incredibly difficult, but successfully reinventing yourself after retirement is another challenge altogether. To me, his career shows that success in one stage of life doesn’t have to define what you do for the rest of it. That’s probably what I find most inspiring about him.

我佩服他，主要是因为他能够在两个完全不同的领域都取得出色的成绩。作为运动员达到顶尖水平本身就已经极其困难，而在退役之后成功转型又是另外一种完全不同的挑战。在我看来，他的经历说明，一个人在某个人生阶段取得的成功并不一定会限定他之后的人生道路。这可能也是我觉得他最令人鼓舞的地方。
