The experience I’d like to talk about happened on May 3rd, the last day of the Labor Day holiday. My parents and I had driven to the Laojun Mountains, a well-known tourist attraction not too far from where we lived. We set off at around six in the morning and originally planned to be back home by eight in the evening. Most of the trip went exactly as planned, but the journey home turned out to be a completely different story.

我要讲的这次经历发生在5月3日，也就是劳动节假期的最后一天。我和父母一起自驾去了老君山，它是离我们住的地方不算太远的一处知名旅游景点。我们早上六点左右出发，原本计划晚上八点之前回到家。旅途的大部分都完全按照计划进行，但返程却完全是另一回事。

Just as we were approaching the exit of the highway, we suddenly found ourselves in bumper-to-bumper traffic. As far as I could see, there was an endless line of cars ahead of us, with their red taillights stretching into the distance. At first, we assumed there might have been an accident, so my dad turned on the radio to find out what was going on. Apparently, huge numbers of people had chosen to travel during the holiday and were all making their way home at roughly the same time. As a result, traffic had backed up for more than four kilometers near the tollgate, and there was virtually nothing we could do except sit tight and wait.

就在我们快要驶出高速公路的时候，突然发现自己陷入了水泄不通的车流之中。放眼望去，前面似乎是一眼看不到头的汽车长龙，红色的尾灯一直延伸到远处。一开始，我们以为前方可能发生了交通事故，所以爸爸打开收音机，想弄清楚到底发生了什么。原来，大量游客都选择在假期期间出行，又在差不多同一时间踏上归途。结果，收费站附近的车流已经排出了四公里多，而我们几乎什么也做不了，只能待在原地等待。

To kill time, I pulled out my phone and started scrolling through social media and Douyin. My feed was flooded with people’s holiday updates. Some had gone on trips just like us, some had got together with friends, while others had apparently spent the entire holiday relaxing at home. This article is from Laokaoya website. For the first hour or so, that kept me reasonably entertained, but after nearly two hours, my phone eventually ran out of battery and the tollgate was still nowhere in sight.

What made matters worse was that the traffic was moving at a snail’s pace. Sometimes we’d remain completely stationary for several minutes and then crawl forward by only a few meters. At one point, when the traffic had come to a complete standstill, I got out of the car for a while to stretch my legs. I even struck up a conversation with the driver in front of us, who was just as frustrated as we were. We basically complained about the traffic and joked that everyone in the city seemed to have decided to come home at exactly the same time.

更糟糕的是，车流移动得像蜗牛一样慢。有时候我们会一动不动地停上好几分钟，然后才向前挪动几米。有一次，车流完全停了下来，我干脆下车活动了一会儿腿脚。我甚至还跟前面那辆车的司机聊了起来，他跟我们一样感到非常无奈。我们基本上就是一起抱怨堵车，还开玩笑说整个城市的人似乎都决定在完全相同的时间回家。

By that point, I was getting increasingly restless and frustrated. We’d already spent the entire day travelling and walking around the mountains, so I was exhausted and desperately wanted to get home, take a shower and go to bed. What was particularly irritating was not knowing how much longer the traffic jam was going to last. Every time the cars started moving, I thought the congestion was finally beginning to ease, only for us to grind to a halt again a few minutes later.

到那个时候，我已经越来越坐不住，也越来越烦躁了。我们一整天都在赶路和爬山，所以我已经筋疲力尽，只想赶紧回家洗个澡然后睡觉。尤其让人恼火的是，我们根本不知道还要堵多久。每次前面的车开始移动，我都会以为拥堵终于开始缓解了，结果几分钟之后，我们又一次彻底停了下来。

Eventually, we managed to get through the tollgate and arrived home at around eleven at night, roughly three hours later than we’d originally planned. I was absolutely shattered by then. The experience left such a strong impression on me that I made up my mind never to travel home at the end of a major public holiday again if I could possibly avoid it. Spending hours trapped in bumper-to-bumper traffic taught me that sometimes it’s worth changing your schedule by a day simply to avoid the holiday rush.

最终，我们总算通过了收费站，大约晚上11点才回到家，比原计划晚了三个小时左右。那时候我已经累得筋疲力尽。这次经历给我留下了非常深刻的印象，以至于我下定决心，只要有可能，以后绝对不要再选择大型公共假期的最后一天返程。在水泄不通的车流里困上几个小时让我意识到，有时候为了避开节假日返程高峰，哪怕把行程调整一天也是值得的。
