The place I’d like to recommend is Dali, a city in Yunnan Province in southwestern China. It’s one of the country’s best-known travel destinations, mainly because of its spectacular natural scenery, distinctive local culture and laid-back atmosphere. I’d heard about it for years before I finally got the chance to go there myself during a winter holiday about three years ago.

我想推荐的地方是大理，它位于中国西南部的云南省。大理是国内非常知名的旅游目的地之一，主要以壮观的自然风景、独特的地方文化以及悠闲的氛围而闻名。在真正去那里之前，我其实已经听说大理很多年了。大约三年前的一个寒假，我终于有机会亲自去了一趟。

I deliberately chose winter because I wanted to avoid the peak tourist season and the huge crowds you sometimes get during major holidays. That turned out to be a great decision. The weather was surprisingly mild during my trip, with plenty of sunshine during the day, so it was comfortable enough to spend hours outdoors without either freezing or getting exhausted by the heat.

What makes Dali special is the combination of mountains and water. On one side, you have Erhai Lake, which is enormous and stretches into the distance, and on the other, you can see Cangshan Mountain rising above the city. This article is from Laokaoya website. On a clear day, the whole area is incredibly picturesque, and sometimes you can see the mountains reflected in the water.

大理比较特别的地方在于山水相伴。一边是面积巨大的洱海，一直延伸到远方；另一边则可以看到苍山高高耸立在城市旁边。天气晴朗的时候，整个区域的景色非常漂亮，有时候甚至可以看到山峰倒映在水面上。

There’s also plenty for visitors to do. One of the most popular things is to travel around Erhai Lake, stopping along the way to take photos or explore some of the small towns and villages nearby. When I was there, I spent quite a lot of time by the lake. I remember sitting in a small café overlooking the water with a cup of coffee and doing absolutely nothing for nearly an entire afternoon. I completely lost track of time, which is actually one of my favorite memories of the trip.

Dali also has a completely different side after dark. You know, there are restaurants, cafés and bars where travelers can have a drink, listen to music and meet people from different parts of the country. So depending on what you’re in the mood for, you can spend the day enjoying the scenery and then have a much livelier evening.

到了晚上，大理又会呈现出完全不同的一面。那里有很多餐厅、咖啡馆和酒吧，游客可以喝点东西、听听音乐，还可能认识来自全国不同地方的人。所以根据自己的心情，你既可以白天欣赏自然风景，晚上又可以体验更加热闹的一面。

The main reason I’d recommend Dali is that it offers a real change of pace. When I was there, I found it surprisingly easy to switch off and leave the daily grind behind. There was no pressure to rush from one attraction to another. I could spend hours walking by the lake, sit in a café and watch the world go by, or simply wander around without any particular plan. For someone who’s tired of a hectic routine and wants somewhere to slow down and recharge, I think Dali is hard to beat.
