The party I’d like to talk about was a housewarming party that one of my best friends threw about two months ago after moving into a new apartment. We’ve known each other since we were little because we grew up in the same neighborhood and went to the same school, so I was really happy for him when he finally got his own place.

我想说的是大约两个月前，我最好的朋友之一搬进新公寓之后举办的一次乔迁聚会。我们从小就认识，因为小时候不仅住在同一个社区，而且还在同一所学校上学。所以当他终于有了属于自己的住处时，我真的替他感到高兴。

He invited a small group of close friends over to celebrate, and the party was held in his new apartment in the city center. It wasn’t a huge place, but he’d done it up really nicely. The interior had a clean, minimalist feel to it, without too much unnecessary decoration. He was also really into technology, so he’d installed quite a few smart devices, including a voice-controlled TV and a fingerprint lock. Naturally, we spent the first half hour wandering around and checking everything out.

What made the party particularly memorable was that we didn’t just order food and sit around talking. We actually cooked together, and one of the things we made was a traditional Chinese steamed cake called fagao. This article is from Laokaoya website. It’s usually made with ingredients such as flour and sugar, and we added some red dates as well. The name is considered auspicious in Chinese because it sounds associated with prosperity and making progress, so we thought it was especially appropriate for someone moving into a new home.

这次聚会让我印象特别深刻的一点是，我们并没有只是点些外卖然后坐在那里聊天，而是一起动手做饭。其中一样东西就是中国传统食物发糕。它通常会用到面粉和糖等原料，我们还在里面加了一些红枣。发糕这个名字在中文里有非常吉利的寓意，会让人联想到兴旺以及步步高升，所以我们觉得朋友搬进新家的时候做这个特别合适。

None of us were particularly good cooks, though, so the whole process was a bit chaotic. People kept giving each other completely different instructions, someone added too much of one ingredient, and the kitchen was an absolute mess by the time we finished. Somehow, the fagao still turned out surprisingly well. We all gathered around the table afterwards, had dinner, tried the food we’d made and had a good laugh about our terrible cooking skills.

What I enjoyed most was simply having the chance to catch up with everyone. As we’ve got older, we’ve all become much busier with work or study, so it’s increasingly difficult to get the whole group together. That evening, though, nobody seemed to be in a rush. We talked about what had been going on in our lives, brought up funny stories from when we were younger and even talked about what we hoped to do in the next few years.

我最喜欢的其实就是有机会和大家好好聚一聚。随着年龄增长，我们都因为工作或者学习变得越来越忙，所以想让所有人聚到一起也越来越困难。但那天晚上，大家似乎都不着急离开。我们聊了聊彼此最近生活中发生的事情，重新提起小时候的一些趣事，甚至还谈到了未来几年各自想做些什么。

So for me, it wasn’t the size of the party or anything particularly extravagant that made it special. It was more about celebrating an important milestone in my friend’s life and spending quality time with people I’d known for years. By the end of the evening, there was this really warm and relaxed atmosphere, and I remember thinking that we should make more time for gatherings like that. That’s why the party has stuck in my mind ever since.

所以对我来说，让这次聚会变得特别的并不是聚会规模有多大，也不是什么特别奢华的安排。真正重要的是，我们一起庆祝了朋友人生中的一个重要时刻，同时也和认识多年的朋友们度过了一段很有意义的时光。到了晚上快结束的时候，整个聚会的氛围特别温馨而轻松。我还记得自己当时在想，我们以后真的应该多抽出一些时间像这样聚一聚。这就是为什么这次聚会直到现在仍然让我印象深刻。
