A long-term goal I’ve had for quite a few years is to win a prize in a calligraphy competition organized by the calligraphy association in my province. I’ve been practising Chinese calligraphy since I was a child, so winning recognition for something I’ve devoted so much time to would mean a great deal to me.

一个我已经坚持了很多年的长期目标，是在我们省书法协会组织的书法比赛中获得奖项。我从小就开始练习中国书法，所以如果自己投入了这么多时间的一项爱好最终能够得到认可，对我来说会非常有意义。

Interestingly, I didn’t take up calligraphy entirely of my own accord. When I was little, my parents insisted that I learn it because they believed good handwriting would give me an edge at school and perhaps even later in my career. This article is from Laokaoya website. At first, practising felt more like a chore than a hobby. I had to sit still for ages, hold the brush properly and repeatedly copy the same characters until my parents were satisfied.

有意思的是，我最初学习书法并不完全是出于自己的意愿。小时候，父母坚持让我学习书法，因为他们觉得一手好字能够让我在学校里占些优势，甚至将来工作时也可能有所帮助。一开始，练习书法对我来说更像是一项任务，而不是一种爱好。我得长时间坐在那里，正确地握住毛笔，然后反复临摹同样的汉字，直到父母满意为止。

Over time, though, something changed. I gradually grew to appreciate the sense of calm I got from concentrating on every single stroke. Whenever I picked up a brush, I could shut out everything else and focus entirely on the characters in front of me. Even after I moved away from home to continue my education, I kept up the habit rather than letting it fall by the wayside.

不过随着时间推移，我的想法慢慢发生了变化。我逐渐开始享受那种全神贯注于每一笔时所获得的平静感。每当拿起毛笔，我似乎就能把其他事情暂时抛在脑后，完全专注于眼前的汉字。后来即使我离开家乡去外地上学，也一直保持着这个习惯，没有让它半途而废。

As for how I’m going to achieve my goal, I think consistency is the key. I plan to keep practising regularly, study the work of accomplished calligraphers and seek feedback whenever I get the chance. Rather than simply repeating what I’m already comfortable with, I also want to identify my weaknesses and work on them deliberately. Since the competition is held regularly, I can continue submitting my work and learn from each attempt instead of putting all my hopes on one particular year.

至于如何实现这个目标，我觉得坚持是最关键的。我打算继续保持规律练习，研究优秀书法家的作品，并且只要有机会就向别人请教、获得反馈。与其一直重复自己已经熟悉的内容，我也希望能够找出自己的薄弱之处，然后有针对性地进行练习。因为这个比赛会定期举办，所以我可以继续提交自己的作品，从每一次尝试中积累经验，而不是把所有希望都寄托在某一年上。

The main reason this goal matters so much to me is that I’ve put nearly fifteen years into calligraphy. Winning a prize would be a form of recognition from people who genuinely understand the art, and it would reassure me that all those years of practice had paid off. Even if it takes me several more years to get there, I’m prepared to stick with it. In a way, the long journey towards the goal is just as meaningful to me as the prize itself.

这个目标对我如此重要，主要是因为我已经在书法上投入了将近15年的时间。如果能够获奖，就意味着自己的作品得到了真正懂书法的人的认可，也会让我觉得这么多年的练习终于得到了回报。即使还需要再花好几年才能实现，我也愿意继续坚持下去。从某种意义上说，对我而言，实现目标的漫长过程本身和最终获得奖项同样有意义。
