The interesting building I’d like to talk about is Jing’an Temple, which I came across during a trip to Shanghai. I went there during one of my summer holidays, and since I come from a relatively small city, I was completely taken aback by Shanghai at first. There seemed to be skyscrapers everywhere, the streets were packed with people, and there were enormous shopping malls on almost every corner. One day, while I was wandering around the city center, I suddenly came across this traditional Buddhist temple surrounded by modern high-rises.

我想说的有趣建筑是静安寺，是我去上海旅行的时候偶然发现的。那次旅行是在一个暑假。由于我来自一座相对较小的城市，刚到上海的时候确实有点被震撼到了。到处似乎都是摩天大楼，街上人来人往，巨大的购物中心随处可见。有一天，我正在市中心闲逛，突然看到了一座被现代高楼环绕的传统佛教寺庙。

What immediately caught my eye was how dramatically the temple stood out from its surroundings. The surrounding area is full of glass, steel and concrete, whereas the temple has traditional Chinese roofs, red doors and elaborate architectural details. Some parts of the complex have a striking golden appearance, so when the sunlight hits them, they almost seem to glow. Seen against the skyscrapers behind them, the traditional buildings stand in stark contrast to the modern cityscape.

最先吸引我注意的是静安寺与周围环境形成的巨大反差。附近到处都是玻璃、钢铁和混凝土建成的现代建筑，而寺庙则拥有传统的中式屋顶、红色大门以及精美的建筑细节。建筑群中的一些部分呈现出非常醒目的金色，所以阳光照射在上面的时候，看起来几乎会发光。以背后的摩天大楼为背景，这些传统建筑与现代城市景观形成了鲜明对比。

I was so intrigued that I decided to go inside and have a proper look around. I later learned that Jing’an Temple has a history stretching back many centuries, although the complex has undergone reconstruction and renovation over the course of its history. This article is from Laokaoya website. What fascinated me was that despite all the changes Shanghai has gone through, a Buddhist temple with such a long history still occupies such a prominent position in one of the busiest parts of the city.

我当时特别好奇，于是决定进去好好参观一下。后来我了解到，静安寺拥有延续数百年的悠久历史，不过在漫长的历史过程中，这座寺庙也经历过重建和修缮。真正让我觉得有意思的是，尽管上海经历了如此巨大的变化，一座拥有悠久历史的佛教寺庙至今仍然坐落在城市最繁华的区域之一，而且占据着如此醒目的位置。

The moment I stepped through the gates, the atmosphere seemed to change completely. Outside, there was traffic, crowds and the constant hustle and bustle of a huge city, but inside, everything felt much calmer. People were walking around quietly, and for a moment it was easy to forget that I was right in the middle of one of China’s biggest cities. It felt almost like an oasis of calm surrounded by all the noise and activity outside.

走进寺庙大门的一瞬间，周围的氛围似乎完全变了。外面是车流、人群以及大城市永不停歇的喧嚣，而里面的一切却安静了很多。人们安静地在寺庙中走动，有那么一会儿，我甚至很容易忘记自己正身处中国最大的城市之一的中心地带。它就像喧嚣城市中一片难得的宁静之地。

That’s really why I found the building so interesting. It wasn’t simply because the temple itself looked beautiful or had a long history. What impressed me most was the juxtaposition of old and new. You could stand in front of a traditional Buddhist building and look up to see modern skyscrapers towering behind it. To me, it was a vivid example of how tradition and modernity can coexist in the same city, and that contrast has stuck in my mind ever since.

这也正是我觉得这座建筑如此有趣的原因。并不仅仅是因为寺庙本身看起来很漂亮或者拥有悠久的历史，最让我印象深刻的是新与旧并存所形成的反差。站在一座传统佛教建筑前面，抬起头却可以看到现代摩天大楼高高耸立在它的身后。对我来说，这非常生动地展现了传统与现代如何共存于同一座城市，而这种强烈的对比直到现在仍然让我记忆深刻。
