A type of food that immediately springs to mind is niangao, or Chinese New Year cake. It’s a traditional food that many Chinese families eat during the Spring Festival, although the exact way it’s prepared varies considerably from one part of the country to another. In my family, it has been part of our New Year celebrations for as long as I can remember.
Niangao is generally made from glutinous rice or glutinous rice flour, which gives it its distinctive chewy and slightly sticky texture. Once it’s been made, there are all sorts of ways to prepare it. It can be steamed, pan-fried or cut into slices and stir-fried with other ingredients. The version I’m most familiar with is the savory one my grandmother used to make when I was a child.
Around Chinese New Year, she would cut the niangao into relatively thin slices and cook it with vegetables and seasonings. This article is from Laokaoya website. Do not copy or repost it. I can still vividly remember standing in the kitchen waiting for it to be ready while the rest of my family were preparing other dishes for our New Year’s Eve dinner. When it finally appeared on the table, it was usually one of the first dishes I went for.
What makes niangao particularly appropriate for the Spring Festival, though, is the symbolism behind its name. In Chinese, the word gao in niangao sounds the same as the word meaning “high”. Because of this play on words, eating niangao is traditionally associated with the hope of rising higher or making progress year after year. In other words, people aren’t simply eating it to satisfy their appetite. It also represents their hopes for greater success and a better life in the year ahead.
Personally, I have a real soft spot for it. Partly that’s because I genuinely enjoy its chewy texture, but I think nostalgia plays an even bigger role. The taste reminds me of New Year’s Eve dinners at home, with everyone gathered around the same table. Now that I’m older, I appreciate the tradition much more than I did as a child. To me, niangao isn’t just something to eat. It’s one of those foods that immediately brings back memories of family reunions and the festive atmosphere of Chinese New Year.
