Describe a person who often helps others

Well, the person I would like to talk about is one of my college friends called Wang Jie. We studied at the same university, and although we were not in exactly the same class, we became quite close because we often worked on similar projects and spent a lot of time in the library together.

He is probably one of the most helpful people I have ever met. What makes him different is that he does not only help his close friends. He is also willing to help people he does not know very well, as long as he feels that they are in trouble and he is able to do something about it.

At university, he helped others quite often, almost on a weekly basis. For example, if someone had difficulty understanding a lecture, he would explain the key points patiently. If a classmate’s laptop had a problem before a deadline, he would try to fix it. You know, sometimes he even helped younger students choose courses or prepare for exams.

One experience that impressed me most happened in my second year. I had been absent from school for several days because I was ill, and when I came back, I found it really hard to catch up with one of our programming courses. This article is from laokaoya website. I was quite stressed because there was going to be a small test the following week. After Wang Jie heard about this, he spent two evenings helping me go through the materials I had missed. He explained the difficult parts step by step and even made some simple notes for me.

What I appreciated most was that he never made me feel stupid. Some people may help others, but they do it in a way that makes you feel embarrassed. Wang Jie was not like that at all. He was patient, calm and encouraging. Whenever I made a mistake, he would simply say, “Don’t worry. This part is confusing at first, but you’ll get it after a bit of practice.”

I think he helps others mainly because he has a strong sense of empathy. He can easily put himself in other people’s shoes. Also, he once told me that he had received a lot of help from senior students when he first entered university, so he wanted to pass that kindness on to others.

To be honest, I feel lucky to know someone like him. He taught me that helping others does not always mean doing something huge or dramatic. Sometimes, a few hours of patience, a useful explanation, or a simple act of kindness can make a real difference to another person.
