The gift I’d like to buy is a smart speaker made by Baidu, a major Chinese technology company. It comes with a voice assistant called Xiaodu, so instead of having to operate it through a screen, you can simply speak to it and ask it to play music, set an alarm, find information or do a variety of other things.

我想买的礼物是百度生产的一款智能音箱。百度是中国一家大型科技公司。这款音箱配备了一个叫作“小度”的语音助手，所以使用者不需要通过屏幕来操作，只需要直接跟它说话，就可以让它播放音乐、设置闹钟、查询信息或者完成各种其他操作。

I’d like to give it to my best friend, Xiaoming, whom I’ve known since primary school. We also went to the same secondary school, so we’ve known each other for years and have always been extremely close. He recently underwent a minor operation on his eyes, and according to his doctor, the recovery process will take about a month. During that period, he’s supposed to avoid putting too much strain on his eyes, which means cutting down considerably on things like reading, watching television and playing video games.

As you can imagine, he’s been bored out of his mind because most of the things he normally does to kill time involve staring at a screen. This article is from Laokaoya website. I wanted to get him something that would keep him entertained without putting additional strain on his eyes, so I started browsing online for ideas. After looking around for a couple of days, I came across this smart speaker and immediately thought it would be right up his street.

可以想象，他现在已经无聊透顶了，因为平时用来打发时间的大多数活动都需要盯着屏幕。我想送他一样既能让他消磨时间，又不会给眼睛增加额外负担的东西，所以就在网上寻找合适的礼物。找了几天之后，我偶然看到了这款智能音箱，立刻觉得它非常适合他。

What makes it particularly suitable is that it’s almost entirely voice-controlled. He could use it to listen to music, stream podcasts or audiobooks, set reminders and even look up information without constantly reaching for his phone. In other words, it would give him plenty of ways to keep himself occupied while allowing his eyes to get the rest they need.

它特别适合他的地方在于，几乎所有功能都可以通过语音控制。他可以用它听音乐、播放播客或者有声书、设置提醒，甚至查询信息，而不需要不停地拿起手机。换句话说，它可以给他提供很多打发时间的方式，同时又能让眼睛得到需要的休息。

I think it’s a much more thoughtful gift than simply buying him something expensive. It addresses a problem he’s dealing with right now and would make his recovery period considerably less tedious. Hopefully, by the time he’s fully recovered, he’ll still find plenty of uses for it, so it won’t end up gathering dust in a corner.

我觉得这比单纯给他买一件昂贵的东西更有心意。它能够解决他现在正面临的实际问题，也可以让他的恢复期不至于那么枯燥。希望等他完全康复之后，这款音箱依然能够派上不少用场，而不是最后被扔在角落里吃灰。
