A change that has saved me a considerable amount of time was getting a bicycle to travel around my university campus. My university is enormous, and although I lived in a dormitory right on campus, walking to the teaching building and back could take more than 40 minutes altogether. Since I normally had to make that journey at least twice a day, I was spending a surprising amount of time simply getting from one place to another.

一个为我节省了大量时间的改变，是买了一辆自行车在大学校园里代步。我的大学非常大，虽然我就住在校内宿舍，但从宿舍步行到教学楼再回来，一共可能需要40多分钟。因为通常每天至少要走两趟，所以我发现自己仅仅为了从一个地方前往另一个地方就要花掉相当多的时间。

I hadn’t actually planned to buy a bicycle. One day, while I was waiting for a friend near the east gate of the university, I came across a promotional stand set up by a mobile phone company. They were running a special offer: if you topped up your phone account with 500 RMB, you’d receive a foldable bicycle for free. It immediately caught my attention because I would have spent that money on my phone bills sooner or later anyway. After asking a few questions and making sure there wasn’t a catch, I decided to go for it.

其实我原本并没有打算买自行车。有一天，我在学校东门附近等朋友的时候，偶然看到一家通信运营商设置的促销摊位。他们当时正在搞活动，只要给手机账户充值500元，就可以免费获得一辆折叠自行车。这立刻引起了我的兴趣，因为这500元反正早晚都会被我用来支付手机费用。在问清楚具体情况并确认没有什么隐藏条件之后，我就决定参加这个活动。

The bicycle itself was nothing fancy. It was tiny and green, with the company’s logo printed on the basket, and to be perfectly frank, it looked slightly like something designed for a teenager. This article is from Laokaoya website. It certainly couldn’t compete with a proper high-end bicycle, but as far as I was concerned, it did the job perfectly well.

The difference it made to my daily routine was remarkable. My usual round trip between the dormitory and the teaching building went from roughly 40 minutes to about 10. That meant I could save around half an hour each time. Instead of wasting that time walking across campus, I could sleep a little longer in the morning, have a proper breakfast or use the extra time to finish an assignment.

Looking back, I think it was one of those small changes that made a surprisingly big difference to my life. What I liked most was that it didn’t require me to reorganize my entire schedule. I simply changed the way I got around campus and immediately freed up a considerable amount of time every day. I was also quite lucky to stumble across that promotion, because otherwise I might have carried on walking everywhere for another year.

现在回头来看，我觉得这是那种看起来很小，却给生活带来了意外巨大改变的事情。我最喜欢的一点是，它并不需要我彻底重新安排自己的日程。我只是改变了在校园里的出行方式，就立刻为自己每天腾出了大量时间。而且我也觉得自己挺幸运的，因为如果当时没有碰巧遇到那个促销活动，我可能还会继续步行一年。
