An important decision that immediately comes to mind is the one I made when I was eleven, when I had to decide whether to transfer to another primary school. At the time, I’d been studying at Huayuan Primary School for four years. It was only about a five-minute walk from my home, and I was extremely settled there. I had a close circle of friends, got along really well with my teachers and was even the class monitor, so I had absolutely no intention of leaving.
我马上想到的一个重要决定，是我11岁时决定是否转到另一所小学。当时我已经在花园小学读了四年。学校离我家步行只有大约五分钟，而且我已经完全适应了那里的生活。我有一群关系很好的朋友，跟老师们相处得也非常融洽，而且还是班长，所以当时的我完全没有离开那里的想法。
Things changed when my family moved to the northeastern part of the city just after I finished fourth grade. Although my hometown wasn’t particularly large, the move meant that getting to my old school would suddenly become much more time-consuming. I’d have to spend over an hour more commuting every day, and my parents were too tied up with work to drop me off and pick me up on a daily basis.

I was genuinely torn between the two options. On the one hand, staying meant I could remain with the friends and teachers I’d grown deeply attached to and carry on in an environment where I felt completely at home. On the other hand, transferring would cut down my daily commute dramatically, give me more time to sleep and study, and take quite a bit of pressure off my parents as well. I spent about four days going back and forth in my mind, weighing up the pros and cons before eventually deciding that transferring was the more sensible option.

I did have one request, though. I asked my parents not to complete the transfer straight away. I wanted to spend the first day of the new term at my old school so that I could say a proper goodbye to my classmates and teachers. I still remember that day quite vividly. A few of my closest friends were completely taken aback when I told them I was leaving, and saying goodbye turned out to be much harder than I’d anticipated. I’d spent four years seeing those people almost every single day, so walking away from that familiar environment was quite emotional for me.

The first few weeks at the new school weren’t exactly plain sailing either. I didn’t know anyone, I wasn’t familiar with the teachers, and for a while I desperately missed my old classmates. However, little by little, I settled in, struck up friendships with some of my new classmates and got used to my new surroundings. At the same time, my journey to school became considerably shorter, which meant I no longer had to waste so much time commuting every day. So from a practical point of view, the decision definitely paid off.
刚到新学校的前几个星期也并非一帆风顺。我一个人都不认识，对老师也不熟悉，而且有一段时间特别想念以前的同学。不过，我慢慢适应了下来，跟一些新同学交上了朋友，也逐渐习惯了新的环境。与此同时，我每天上学的路程也缩短了很多，这意味着我再也不用把那么多时间浪费在通勤上。所以从实际角度来看，这个决定最终确实给我带来了好处。
Looking back, I think the decision was important for a reason that goes far beyond simply changing schools. It was probably the first major decision my parents allowed me to make entirely for myself. I had to weigh up the pros and cons, let go of something I was deeply attached to and come to terms with the uncertainty of starting somewhere new. For an eleven-year-old, that was quite a daunting experience.
现在回过头来看，我觉得这个决定的重要性其实远远不只是换了一所学校。它可能是父母第一次允许我完全由自己做出的一个重大决定。我需要权衡利弊，放下自己非常留恋的人和环境，同时学会接受进入一个全新地方所带来的不确定性。对于一个11岁的孩子来说，这其实是一件相当具有挑战性的事情。
More importantly, it taught me that making the right decision doesn’t necessarily mean choosing the option that feels the safest or most comfortable. Sometimes you have to step out of your comfort zone, embrace a degree of uncertainty and trust that things will eventually fall into place. In my case, they did, and I think that experience made me much more confident about making difficult decisions later in life.
更重要的是，这件事让我明白，做出正确的决定并不一定意味着选择那个让自己感觉最安全或者最舒服的选项。有时候，我们需要走出自己的舒适区，接受一定程度的不确定性，并相信事情最终会慢慢步入正轨。至少对我来说，事情最终确实如此，而这段经历也让我后来面对艰难选择时更加有信心。
