I’d like to talk about the time I took part in the Mathematical Contest in Modeling with two other students and eventually won an award. It’s an international competition in which teams of three are given a real-world problem and have to analyze it, build a mathematical model, and write an academic paper within a very tight deadline. As a social science student, I had very little experience with mathematical modeling, so the whole competition was well outside my comfort zone.

我想讲的是我和另外两名同学参加数学建模竞赛并最终获奖的一次经历。这是一项国际性的比赛，每支队伍由三个人组成。参赛者需要针对一个现实问题进行分析，建立数学模型，并且在非常紧迫的截止时间之前完成一篇学术论文。作为一名社会科学专业的学生，我几乎没有什么数学建模经验，所以整个比赛对我来说完全超出了自己的舒适区。

I knew I couldn’t make up for my lack of expertise in mathematics overnight, so instead I decided to play to my strengths. I got in touch with two straight-A students from the mathematics department and asked if they wanted to team up with me. This article is from Laokaoya website. To my surprise, they agreed almost immediately. It turned out to be a great combination because they had a much stronger grasp of mathematical modeling, while my strengths lay in analyzing information, structuring arguments, and academic writing.

我知道自己不可能一夜之间弥补数学方面专业知识的不足，所以我决定发挥自己的优势。我联系了数学系两名成绩非常优秀的学生，问他们是否愿意和我组队。让我意外的是，他们几乎立刻就答应了。事实证明，我们的组合非常不错，因为他们对数学建模的掌握远远强于我，而我的优势则在于分析信息、组织论证以及学术写作。

The biggest challenge, though, was the intense time pressure. We had to work against the clock, so we divided up the workload according to what each of us was best at. At the beginning, we analyzed the problem together, identified the key variables, and agreed on a general approach. My teammates then focused on building and testing the model, while I worked on turning our ideas and findings into a coherent academic paper. Whenever they updated the model, I had to revise the relevant sections of the paper, so there was a lot of back-and-forth between us.

不过，最大的挑战还是巨大的时间压力。我们必须争分夺秒，因此按照每个人最擅长的事情分配了工作。刚开始的时候，我们一起分析问题、确定关键变量，并商量出一个大致的解决方案。之后，我的队友集中精力建立和测试模型，而我则负责把我们的想法和研究结果整理成一篇逻辑连贯的学术论文。每当他们更新模型，我就需要修改论文中相应的部分，所以整个过程中我们需要不断沟通和调整。

Things became particularly stressful towards the end. We were running out of time, but there were still calculations to double-check, graphs to revise, and parts of the paper that needed polishing. We ended up pulling an all-nighter and spent the final few hours ironing out the remaining problems and fine-tuning the paper. Eventually, we managed to submit everything just before the deadline.

到了最后阶段，情况变得尤其紧张。时间已经所剩无几，但仍然有一些计算结果需要复核、图表需要修改，论文中也有一些部分需要进一步完善。最后我们干脆熬了一个通宵，用最后几个小时解决剩余的问题，并对论文进行最后调整。最终，我们成功赶在截止时间之前提交了所有内容。

When I found out that we’d won an award, I felt an enormous sense of accomplishment. Of course, I was thrilled that all our hard work had paid off, but I was even more proud that I’d managed to rise to a challenge that initially seemed far beyond my abilities. The experience also taught me that overcoming a difficulty doesn’t always mean doing everything on your own. Sometimes it’s about recognizing your limitations, finding the right people to work with, and making sure everyone can play to their strengths.
