The building I’d like to talk about is the Yellow Crane Tower, one of the most iconic landmarks in my hometown, Wuhan, the capital of Hubei Province. Strictly speaking, it isn’t a skyscraper, but it’s over 50 meters tall and stands on top of Snake Hill, so it looks incredibly imposing when you see it from a distance.
我想说的建筑是黄鹤楼，它是我的家乡武汉最具代表性的地标之一。武汉是湖北省的省会。严格来说，黄鹤楼并不是一座摩天大楼，但它高度超过50米，而且坐落在蛇山之巅，所以从远处望过去的时候显得非常高大壮观。
The tower is mainly a historic and cultural attraction nowadays. The earliest version dates back more than 1,800 years, although the building has been destroyed and rebuilt many times throughout history. The present-day tower was completed in the 1980s and was designed with reference to an earlier version from the Qing Dynasty. Visitors can climb to the upper floors and get a panoramic view of the Yangtze River and the surrounding parts of Wuhan.

In terms of appearance, it’s completely different from the glass-and-steel high-rises you normally see in a modern city. It’s a five-story tower with sweeping upturned eaves and a roof covered in yellow glazed tiles. This article is from Laokaoya website. The different levels gradually become narrower towards the top, which gives the whole building a very distinctive silhouette. What I find particularly striking is the contrast between the traditional tower and the modern skyline around it.

Another thing I love about the tower is the history and legends associated with it. One of the stories I heard as a child was about a mysterious Taoist who painted a yellow crane on the wall of a tavern. According to the legend, the crane could come to life, and the Taoist eventually rode away on its back. I obviously don’t take the story literally, but as a child I found it absolutely fascinating, and it made the tower seem almost magical to me.

As I grew older, I also became more aware of the tower’s cultural significance. It has appeared in famous Chinese poems and has been associated with Wuhan for generations. So whenever I visit it, I’m not just looking at an attractive building. I feel as though I’m standing in a place that connects the modern city with more than a thousand years of history and literature. Being able to look out over the Yangtze from the top makes that feeling even stronger. That’s probably why the Yellow Crane Tower has always had a special place in my mind.
